If you are in the area this is a nice stop. The best part was the walkway down to the beach with lots of informative signs about the history and wildlife of the area. We bicycled the island, and the lighthouse made a nice turnaround point. The nearby historic fort ruins were closed. Only open to visitors from 8am to 4PM M - F. Likewise, this Google page said the lighthouse was open to 2, but it was locked up.
They keep up with the lighthouse and landscape nicely. There is a nice walkway to the beach with info along the way. Some of the pictures are super low quality.nThere is very limited parking for the lighthouse and on the island in general. This can be a real problem in the busy season - not so much other times.
Like a few others have said, not the prettiest of lighthouses. Of the big 7 NC lighthouses, I rank this at the bottom. Not pretty brick painted unique, just like a boring concrete finish. No nice houses/museums in front to look at, just a simple circle pathway. Not a cool, remote location with gorgeous views, just right in the middle of beach houses across from the beach. Were afraid with only 30 minute parking in front we would run out of time. We had 25 minutes to go when we left.... crossed it off the Lighthouse List, but definitely ranked at the bottom. Guess we're just spoiled from the other gorgeous lighthouses in NC!
Even though the Lighthouse was closed it was a wonderful experience. I wasn't able to get out of the car. While my hubby walked around, I snapped a picture of it. I was so close trying to get the whole thing in the frame; I turned my phone diagonal so it looks like it's falling. I have a better picture that I will try to post here.
Closed for COVID, but right across the street from the beach for a good seashell hunt and quick pics. Only 30 minute parking at the lighthouse, but public access parking is only a couple minutes away.
