Beautiful, serene, and historic chapel in Lexington. The final resting place of many members of the Lee family, including Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his father, American Patriot and Revolutionary War hero, Henry Lee III, better known as “Light-Horse Harry.” Robert E. Lee’s horse, Traveller, is buried just outside the chapel. Definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in learning more about the Lee family of Virginia.
Very interesting and informative. A must for anyone that is a history buff.
Beautifully preserved and genuinely friendly staff who are really proud of keeping history alive. The tour guide that day was a gentleman from Canada.
Lee Chapel & Museum is easily my favorite location in all of Lexington.nnIt's an incredible well kept Chapel inside and out.nnIt is completely free of charge.nnOnce entering you are immediately met with the open chapel room and from afar will see The General's memorial - a sculpture of him laying in state - on each side you will see original paintings of General George Washington to the left and Lee himself to the right.nnYou're allowed to go into the room where Lee's sculpture is at state and eventually will veer to the left down to the actual crypts. The actual crypts host Lee among many of his kin, including Revolutionary War Hero, his father Light Horse Harry Lee, Wife, and Children.nnHis office is also in the lower room still intact and preserved just the way he left it the day that he died.nnOutside you'll find his trusty mount Traveler buried near by.nnAn incredibly impressive place that anyone who finds themselves in Lexington must absolutely see.
I stop by when I am traveling that way. It is well worth the time. I don't understand the Lincoln pennys on Travler's stone out the south door. Good luck for exams, but Lincoln?
