A true piece of history, this is a worthwhile endeavor to get to and see. We were here obviously before Covid; I hope it can return to its old self: we took a flight from upside to the little airport here; that alone afforded wonderful views of the cliffs ..a rickety old bus picked us up there for the tour of the settlement; again, a really neat part of the tour: the driver had known many past residents who'd suffered from Hansens...it was the best 4 hours...we toured the church; had time to picnic(bring own food); read up about this site prior to coming so that you truly understand what you will experience here.

Came to work at the park to replace the bridge on the trail, had a great time, the view is magnificent and even had the chance to see whales from the trail and plenty of dears.

This is Sacred Ground! If you stop and quiet yourself, you can feel the earth cry out the anguish of the 103 years of exiled people banished from family and friends.nThen there are the rays of light shining through the darkness of people who came to help. Among whom are St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. The two Hawaiian saints who spent their life to bring hope in the midst of what seemed hopeless.nThere is history here that needs never be forgotten.

Beautiful place, not the norm for sure. It's very isolated, so plan on hiking your needs (food, toiletries) in and out.

Really nice park, with some cool sculptures. Lepers used to be put away here in ancient times. There are special tours, and you can ask for a ride on a mule throughout the tour. It is a group thing, and works very well if you are traveling alone or with someone.
