Blackbern Park

Formally Blackbern Park the Robert Coleman Community Spray Park and Pavilion is a great park towards the Southside of Town.nnAnnually on the 8th day of August this park plays host to The 8th of August Celebrations to honor Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves.nnBack in those days the Telegraph was still in its infancy stages and during The War Between the States, aka The Civil War, word did not reach this part of the world until months after President Lincoln signed his infamous proclamation.nnEvery year during those times many gather in this place to honor and remember this news and the forefathers before.nnA small park yes, but a community park with heart as many take great pride in its availability.nnA ball field to one end. Horse shoe pits. A couple picnic pavilions with outdoor grills, a small spray park and an outdoor basketball court named in honor of a late great Legend Mr. Clarence 'Big House' Gaines.nnA fine man, mentor and great men's high school basketball coach with the folklore of Norman Dale of 'Hoosiers' fame, and the Commanding Presence of Adolf Rupp the Infamous Kentucky Wildcats Men's Basketball Coach.nnHe was also the County Jailer for many years. Hence the affectionate and respectful 'Big House' Moniker.nnBeloved and respected by all in this community in Mr. Big House Gaines you always got a fair shake. But you damn sure better give him your best in return! Fair is fair right?nnLastly, the now-namesake of the park overall is in honor of longtime Paducah City Commissioner (Mayor Pro Tem) and U. S. Postal Service Worker, Supervisor Mr. Robert Coleman.nnA fine man and a true civil servant who is loved and respected by so many in this community.nnCome by and see us at Coleman Park. Grills are on and the b-ball court is ready for a pick-up game. See you there!
