Nice campground
Nice campground tucked away in the woods. DNR stated water was available at the headquarters..it was unavailable. Parkview Acres across the road from the park allows water fill up. Sites are decent sized, not much for privacy if that's something you're looking for. Beautiful trails and sites to be seen.
To date Rifle River Recreation Area is our favorite Michigan camping destination. We enjoy hiking the many miles of scenic trails, kayaking multiple lakes as well as the river, and mountain biking miles of two tracks and trails. Sites are private, large, and with choices of varied forest ecosystems. Leashed dogs are allowed and ours loves all the mentioned activities! But we're not the only campers that keep returning to this park as we see many repeat happy campers, some of which have become our good friends.
My buddies and I stay at the Grebe Lake Cabin every Fall for a weekend kayaking and fishing trip. The cabin sleeps 6, has a table, several chairs, a fire ring, a water pump outside the cabin and a privy a short distance from the cabin. The location is far enough away from other camp areas and cabins that we feel like we have the entire park to ourselves. We have caught bass and pike on the lake and have seen loons and bald eagles. The cabin has a propane heater for chilly nights but no electricity so be sure to bring flashlights and lanterns. It is the perfect place to spend a few days in nature.
Really beautiful views of the lake. So peaceful. Lots of hiking options. Pintail Pond trail is exceptionally tranquil. Very easy hike. All level with some boardwalks. The 2 mile loop southeast of the lake is moderately difficult but doable. I suggest hiking poles for down hills. Campground has a good bathhouse as well. Bring your kayaks if you have them!
