This facility was previously known as Panther Creek, but a former govenor's name was added later as a state facility. The place looks a bit like farm country, because agriculture makes useful prep for wildlife, but some acreage is given a prairie treatment. Man made lakes and ponds are stocked and well maintained, but no powerboating/skiing is allowed. There are small boat and kayak/canoe access, but oddly at least the largest lake does not allow belly boats. None have swimming. There is campsite camping and picnic shelters for day use.

Scenic, beautiful, peaceful -- all words I can use to describe this incredible place. It's a good thing Commonwealth Edison didn't build that coal-fired power plant here back in the 70s -- environmentally speaking, that would've ruined everything. The only smoke I want to smell is the smoke from logs burning in a fire pit, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

If you had the pleasure of visiting this place 2012 or before, you would know today it's a shell of its former glory in many areas. Covid has been a blessing for this place due to tournament cancellations (30 tournament boats on average every weekend from spring until end of fall). 500 acre lake doesn't need that much pressure, it's not sustainable. Hunters out there will kill game and leave carcasses and trash on the ice. Unethical musky fisherman frequent the 80 plus degree water in the summer trolling or casting, resulting in many dead muskie each year (they cannot reproduce in Prairie). Whoever is maintaining these lakes need to wake up and regulate the tournaments and patrol more regularly out there. I'm 40 minutes from the park and will drive any distance to fish something else.

The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The park is very well kept. It’s great for camping, fishing, hiking and hunting. It’s for sure a hidden gem.

We stayed for 3 nights the last weekend of bow season. We pretty much had the place to ourselves. Nice shower house, and beautiful park. Plenty of deer and turkeys. Shotty phone service for att&t and verizon. Cabins were great if you like primitive. I will definitely return!
