The southernmost peat bog in North America, the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area is a virtual microcosm of plant and animal life not often seen this far south. Nestled in the east-central mountains of West Virginia, the natural beauty of the mountains surround the natural depression where the Glades are located. A visitor center nearby helps explain the peat bog as well as the flora and fauna that richly populate it.nnThere are other reasons to visit this location, such as stocked trout fishing rivers, campgrounds, numerous hiking trails, zip lines, resorts, scenic drives, skiing in season, white water rafting, good food, all not far from each other! Its a great area to plan a vacation!

Beautiful and wonderful place to visit! We visited late September but many flowers were still in bloom and the honeybees buzz was amazing. You will see rare plants not found anywhere else in the world. There are bears, so use caution and common sense while hiking some of the wonderful trails available here. The main part is a long boardwalk through the peat moss glade, but there are trails for the more adventurous located near the park entrance that are suitable for hiking or mountain biking.

I enjoyed the Cranberry Glades, but was told by someone else on the trail that it was the worst she had ever seen it. Seems like the time to come is in the Spring when the Cranberries are showing off their colors.nIts an interesting area to visit if you are near by, but not essential. I will be back in the Spring to give it another chance though.

This was about a 30 minute walk on a well maintained boardwalk. There are lots of signs to describe the area and why it's so special. For those with mobility issues, there are no steps and the walk is really easy.

We've stopped two years in a row on our way down to Cass. The views are amazing. I love walking the boardwalk through the swamp and field.
