Very well maintained marker. Be known that it is in someone's backyard.
Very cool tall headstone of the famous TV talking horse Mr Ed. This beautiful granite headstone is engraved with the image of Mr Ed poking his head out of the barn doors, just like on the TV show. The gravesite is in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The horse's real name was Bamboo Harvester a palamino born in 1949, who played the TV character of Mr Ed from 1961 to 1966. The horse was then retired to the Oklahoma farm where the headstone and Mr Ed now reside. There is debate as to whether Mr Ed actually resides here or in California and this is the grave of Pumpkin, sort of a take on the Daniel Boone legend where some claim Missouri, others claim Kentucky. Assuming this was Mr Ed, he was buried in 1970. Originally the only markings was a wooden cross and a horseshoe, until 1990 when this wonderful headstone was erected. The headstone is on private property and I went to the door and the lady gave me permission to go to the back yard to see it. It is hard to find by Google Maps, so when you think you are in the right spot where the GPS says, start looking at the backyards near you and you should be able to see it.
Quirky place to stop if you’re near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The original Mr. Ed is in California but this is the grave of Pumpkin who was the palomino that did some public & promotional events as Mr. Ed.nnIt’s in someone’s backyard so be respectful. Cars were home so I just knocked on the door to ask permission to be polite. I’m sure they are accustomed to people stopping for a pic so I’m sure you’d be fine without knocking.nnMy Gps gave wonky instructions. It’s on the north side of highway 82 near E 710 Rd if you go westbound and reach Arnold Price Drive you went too far.
Quiet and serene. A nice place to lay to rest. According to Google, this is actually the resting place of Pumkin, Mr. EDs stunt double.
Getting this monument for Mr. Ed was one of my favorite memories as part of Banana and Mel in the Morning on Z104.5 in the early 90’s.
