Small place but, informative.

A historic site where Grant's army attempted to dig a canal in order to bypass Vicksburg. The attempt failed as did many others in the northern invasion of the South. The canal channel is still visible. So much rich and colorful history between Vicksburg and Natchez.

Old history! Very interesting.

Free to visit. Accessible 24/7. Only viewable daylight hours. Parking is 30 feet from it. Several signs explain the background. You can see (or go stand in) the 4 foot deep, 30 foot wide, 200 foot long channel.

Having visited the main military park I started out to find Grant's Canal. I had read about it a long time ago and wanted to see what I could learn. The area is very small and only a very small portion of the actual canal exist. There were a few wayside panels with informational signage describing what had taken place and a few monuments. I was happy to see that this was protected as a historical place. If you are wanting to see a piece of history then it would be good to stop by but I would probably leave this as an ending or possibly the starting point. However, you really should be a history buff if you want to stop by. If you are not, then it might be a wasted trip. Other opinions may vary.
