This is a great multi-use trail to walk. It's wide enough to share with cyclists and horses. It's a flat, crush and run trail with plenty of shade. There are also a few benches you can rest on. The view from the bridge is beautiful. We walked from Farmville and the bridge is about 5 mi. There is a closer lot you can park at on River Rd. From there the bridge is only about a mile and there is a bathroom facility there but no running water. In fact, there is no water along the trail so definitely bring some with you. You can also rent bikes close by.
Great place to park on River Rd...nBe sure to pay the parking fee as the ranger checks often.nTwo years ago, I failed to pay the fee, at the parking area at the Northern end of the trestle, and was threatened with arrest. Not a very pleasant experience. He let me off as soon as I deposited the parking fee in the box.
We had a great time walking the High Bridge Trail. We loved the beautiful views , the friendly people, how safe it was for the kids,, and the little benches with view spots. We definitely plan to visit again.
Nice walk out (0.9 mile each way of flat trail). A black snake did cross in front of me.
This is an easy, flat, less than a mile walk through with lots of pretty trees to a gorgeous view. My littles did it with no problem.
