My husband and I are dependant on public transportation and usually if it's nice we would prefer to walk everywhere. Richmond is very accessible for pedestrian traffic.nWe decided that we would take a different route the other day,and we are so glad that we did!nWe saw this park and it was so inviting we decided to take another detour to explore this park. It's cliche, but this really is a hidden gem. It felt like an oasis with people laughing, throwing the frisbee, playing tag.nIt's beautiful, and there is some serious history as well.nDo yourself a favor and cross the lock on the farthest metal footbridge where you can look out to the James. Then you turn around to the first lock, where thousands of ships came to pick up and deliver.nWhen you complete crossing this structure, take a right towards the river and at least peek down the little staircase which is partially hidden. Really, it reminded me of the secret paths that I decided in the woods as a kid.nIn fact, that's how the whole park made us feel....as if we were kids after school.
Love this old haunt. Beautiful megalithic stonework on these ship locks and other cool sites for 360 degrees. A great old railroad bridge that raises by virtue of a huge counterweight. Watch your kids around the locks!
