Nothing but a source of constant noise and disturbance as the privileged LU students and other dilettantes fly endless low-altitude circles over the otherwise peaceful countryside around. What is it about Liberty University that makes its leaders feel like they can trample on the rights to peace and quiet of their neighbors? Bathe their logo up the mountain in electric light at night? No concerns. Flight classes at 8 am every morning over thousands of Forest and Goode residents? No responsibility.
This airport was a nice little place in a country setting with a runway/dragstrip. As of now it is nothing more than a strip of asphalt in a small field with some makeshift sheds for single engine plane storage and a small building alongside the dragstrip/runway. The tiny airport has been purchased by a local university along with around 300 acres of surrounding property. As of now just under 500 acres I believe. The university has summited an application to rezone this area from zoned Agricultural Preserve District APD to PLANNED COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT PCD. They want to turn the area into a commercial zoned area with an aeronautics school a runway for jets and room to expand commercial businesses. This is a nightmare for local residents in this quiet country area.
This beautiful airport started aircraft operations in 1961 and has provided flight training, aviation maintenance, and aviation fuel sales since then; so nothing new about the airport. Mr. Tonkin moved to our area just this past year and seems to not be happy with lots of things; he wants to change aircraft operations in our area because they bother him? There are in fact 4 private airports within 5 nautical miles of Goode, VA, which accounts for a lot of aircraft operations in this area, so it is not all just LU students flying! Perhaps the problem is him and not the airport? The flight training there is outstanding and most of the previous aviation students are flying today doing such jobs as medical flight transports, search and rescue missions, military flights, and flying for the major airlines. Visit the airport one day, take your kids too, a great place to enjoy aviation without fences. The main east west rail line runs through this area; next he will be complaining about Amtrak?
New London airport is now owned by Liberty University. The Rucker Tibbs era is over. The character of this charming old airport is gone-- now its just a flight school for LU.
Great place to go for flight lessons. Friendly people and great prices too
