This place is truly a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. The hills are rolling and the cliffs just seem to come sneak up on the trail. The hiking is great for beginners and will get you calves burning. The trail to tobacco cave that follows the cliff base is pretty and definitely worth a checking out. It does have a 30ft or so steep climb with rope assistance to get on top of the cliffs at the end of the trail. But don't worry it is set on a loop so you I can see the climb but don't have to take the climb. It's worth it. Great place for family or a romantic place for the adventurous couple. Go solo on the weekend or make a appointment during the week.
Great drive down hwy 60.nSuper easy to find. Park at south gate.nTrail maps are easy to follow and the cliffs are amazing to look at. Comparable to red river gorge. Mossy gap is currently accessible by rope only and the drop is no joke. Cave trails are super easy. Not for strollers or children under 2.nAmazing is how i can sum up how awesome the cliffs are. You really get a sense of how small we are in this world there.nWill be back with zero children to hike from the mossy gap from the top on.nSuper great hike.
My dad and uncle hunted here as boys in the late 20’s and early 30’s. They lived nearby across hwy 60 which also had cliffs and caves. Indian remains were in these caves. As a boy in the 50’s dad took me exploring and hunting nearby. It’s nice to see this area has become a reserve
Really cool place!! It's a great hike. The caves are pretty neat. To get up on top of the rocks would be hard for someone who isn't in good shape(would not bring a child under 12) once your up there you can actually see eagles bluff over in troy. The place kinda reminds me of garden of the gods down in southern Illinois. Overall if you got a few hours to kill I'd check it out.
Great trails and rock formations.nWho knew right in our backyard.nNext heading for Upper Trail.nWe had a wonderful day. Definitely going back.
