Pleasantville Cottage School

I was here from 1973-1975 and I gotta say I guess there's nothing else like it. However, I could not wait to get out of there and I am sure it is probably not like it was 40 years ago. Early on, I recognized it for what itnwas, a residential treatment center for the emotionally-disturbed and after that sobering thought, it became easier to deal with being there. However, it is not in the same league as other places (Hawthorne, for instance) which we believed was a place for more hardened individuals or maybe more troublesome youths.

The staff don't do there job right. They lie to OCFS and the Justice Center cases so they don't get in trouble and they show inappropriate things to kids even under the age of 5. Porn to kids under the age of 5 is bad.

Lived there 1956 to 1960nThe place was 100%Jewish .I had my Bar Mitzva there and my Jewish identity blossomed.They dropped the ball by allowingnOr not being able to keep us there beyond the age of 16yrs. They should have followed menAnd guided me after my leaving.My educationnAfter was terrible! We should have Graduated HS and have guidance as to what field to go into etc. I was allowed to return to the same garbage environment I came from!nBut thanks to my own resilience and God giftednabilities I found a profession and flourished.nI was lucky many were not!nStaying until you graduate and even enter college in some cases could help your starknTransition to making it in such a tough environment as NYCnOne thing that stands out was some of the truenlove that some cottage parents and Supervisors gave to the kids.nIt's a grate shame that Pleasantville became a Geto Just housing Black inner city kids.nAre there not white Jewish kids that need that kind of help these days? That School shouldnAt least be by racially mixed,what are you teachingnThose kids? They come from a black GetonAnd they have to leave that environment to be placed in one again! Just crazy!
