Refuge provides a nice hike, especially if there's been enough rain to supply the impoundment for migratory bird. I had difficulty entering Refuge from this end point. Try as destination Howland Island Bridge (closed) and just walk across.

Beautiful roads to ride on bike but you need a mountain bike on the trails. Recommended hiking to my friends. Shows you can still get away from it all near home! Boating is very nice also!

This portion of the wildlife refuge has quite a history to it. Before WWII it was a Civilian Conservation Camp in which working men stayed and made improvements to the area to benefit the local waterfowl who frequent the area during migration. During the war it became a German POW camp where the German prisoners would stay and work during the day in the surrounding community. People used to live and farm here during the 70-80's before the old bridge closed and it became part of the wildlife refuge. Now it's a great place to walk around and see tons of wildlife from frogs and ducks to river otters.

It’s a beautiful walk. A place I’ve been going to since I was young. The bugs have been getting bad the past couple of years to the point where you can’t get out of the car without getting attacked.

Great place for hiking! The trails/farms roads are level and easy to follow. Very scenic because of the marshes, ducks, geese and deer and small wildlife on the island.
