Nice atmosphere, nice people and delicious coffee

Starbucks is unique in that they call your name and for people of color, this is often an opportunity for them to butcher it. I could conform and change my identity and name just to make it less confusing to pronounce 2 syllables (Hum-Mod). This is often a solution offered to me. But today, it was “Hannah”, and I’ll leave you to analyze why that was pronounced. In the same 5 minute visit, I saw how this trade off for people of color was completely wrong. An older white man took the drink of a younger black woman and the barista, who could have corrected the man because he was still in the store, instead sloppily made the drink quickly for the polite lady. What’s the point of being subjugated to basic name mis pronunciation for people of color when it doesn’t even help getting the order to the right people?
