Johns Barber Shop

John has a special touch. You either know him or visit once. If you have the chance to visit he's usually pretty busy but always gives you, your time in the chair. He works at his pace and is pretty funny to talk to. I love him and wish him well during these crazy times.

Got a great haircut here!

So I stopped in because this was an old time barber shop and I Thought that might be interesting and I was visiting the city.nnFirst - When I left I didn't like my haircut at all, it was not evenly cut and I had to go get it touched up at my normal stylist the following day.nnSecond - The whole time he kept talking about politics, I kept trying to change the subject because that is weird and I didn't want to hear about how great Trump was. Not only because I disagree but because that is not what you want to talk about at a professional place. I kept trying to move the conversation or not talk but he wouldn't let it go. The conversation ended with him pointing out a woman walking by the window and asking me if i've noticed how hot the woman are in the city and how they wear skimpy clothes. Wouldn't go back because the cut was bad and because he doesn't know how to be professional.

The shop is cool. You can tell it's been there for decades. Jay and another guy were friendly. Haircut was ok at best.nJay puts some shave cream on my neck, then drags a completely dull razor over my skin doing absolutely nothing besides taking the cream off. My neck is still hairy as if nothing was done. If you're going to offer a neck shave like a barber should; actually shave the neck, not fake it.

John Russo is one the last of the old timey barbers. He grew up across Daniel Street from his shop where the current Portsmouth Post Office is located. He tells great stories of days gone by with your haircut............no extra charge. Not a bad haircut either. I recommend a visit to John's during your next time in Portsmouth.
