Jennings peak is a lovely hike! The trail passes through some very pretty birch forest before rising into lovely higher elevation balsam fir woods. The sandwich mountain trail is quite step for a little while, but the ridge walk that follows is beautiful. Sandwich Mountain itself is less impressive than Jennings.
Counter clockwise...noon peak. To Jennings peak is a great dog friendly hike with a nice easy descent along the brook.
I really appreciated how well plowed this parking lot was for the trailhead. There is a small hill that might be tricky if there is a lot of snow or it was particularly icy. Other than that, this is a very easy lot to get into. The trail is enjoyable. When we went two weeks ago, it was well packed, which I appreciated since there weren’t a lot of blazes and many of them were quite faded.
Very buggy today. Even tho we've had no rain in southern NH, they've had rain up north, and bugs!
From this location, two trails lead/return to/from Jennings Peak and Sandwich Mountain. Most of these trails are located within the Sandwich Mountain Wilderness (a relatively unvisited portion of the White Mountains). Other trails do intersect high up on the main ridge to Sandwich Mountain. The main parking area has space for over 20 vehicles.nnThe first, and most strenuous trail is the Sandwich Mountain Trail. The less strenuous but longer trail is the Drakes Brook Trail. I recommend taking the Sandwich Mountain Trail up and the Drakes Brook Trail down. Also, make sure to take the side trail up to Jennings Peak. The views from this peak are amazing! Next, head up to Sandwich Mountain and return via Drakes Brook Trail. You'll be walking along a growing brook with cascades in the middle section, that ends up a river.nnNote: Both trails require a potentially dangerous river crossing. Take great care in spring and when downpours make the water level high and the current dangerous. In the winter, extra care should be used.nnThe aforementioned loop hike is slightly over 8 miles in length and has some very steep and rough sections.
