sand cave

Sand cave is accessible along a very short boardwalk to look out point at the site where a Cave Explorer Floyd Collins became lodged in a narrow shaft by a loose rock which gained national media news exposure in the early days of am radio. The location is marked by a Kentucky State Historical Marker just outside the National park boundary and has a self guided interpretations signs explaining the events of almost 100 years ago. Parking and trail head available at mammoth cave nation park entrance sign along Ky highway 255 north along park entrance from cave city on old mammoth cave road. Nice views, easy stroll, uncrowded with benches and overlook of sand cave entrance. Beautiful view of bluff and limestone cliff above cave entrance below. DO NOT LEAVE designated Trail: lose ricks slippery ground and steep drops with sharp boulders copperheads and rattle snakes as well as poison ivy and large mammal predators are in area so use caution at all times especially with young children below will result in potential death.Free to visitors no admission fee.
