Calhoun County Park sits on top of some rolling hills , with a great view of the night sky, unpolluted by bright lights. Astronomers come here often from pretty far away. There are camping spots with or without electric, with easy to pull in or back in RV spots available. Several playgrounds, 3 of them I think, are in various areas throughout the park. There is usually access to running water at places, and covered picnic areas and shelters with grills. There are a few small ponds with fish. You will find several designated walking or biking trails here, and either follow the woods line on top of the hills, or go through the woods on them. The trails have been well maintained, and are usually in good shape, with a solid surface. You can find pawpaws, persimmons, and walnuts around the park, along with blackberries and wine berries. It's a really great place, and clean. There's also a large building with a kitchen that can be rented reasonably for events. It's never really crowded, and is a good place to find peace and quiet. People also play baseball, volleyball, and basketball here, and I've also seen people flying RC planes.
So i cant say for telescoped viewing, but to the naked eye it was terrible. There was an obvious amiunt of light polution. Check the clear weather chart and went the night before a new moon. Still had a terrible view. Make sense since its about 5 minutes from a town where every house had a porch lamp on
Great getaway for stargazers and campers! We went off season and there were no running water bathrooms and electric only worked at some of the campsites. So perfect if you want a primitive camping experience with great night sky views!
This park is an astronomer's dream. I met the president of the park board, he's a great guy and he's really outdone all of the state-run parks I've been to for stargazing purposes.nnThe park is open 24 hours a day! I assume that it's because there's no crime in the area at all, being firm gun country.
Excellent area for stargazing, as well as general enjoyment of the outdoors.
