This is probably the best starting point to hike into the Red Creek Gorge (and shortest route). Parking can get crowded on the weekend during peak season. The trail was not too muddy for Dolly Sods. But yes, it's muddy in places.

Beautiful scenery but the trails are some of the worse I have ever set foot on or should I say in?!

Fantastic place, but be prepared crossing muddy spots, sharp rocks, small creeks and waterfalls

Beautiful, intermediate trail through an enchanting landscape that changes from Carolina hemlocks and ferns to mountain meadows and shrubby hillsides. Red Creek is a great lunch spot, sitting on a boulder under the shade of a Carolina hemlock. Two notes: this access point gets you to the better views quicker than the other entrance to the trail. Second: the trail itself is lined with rocks and appears to be built in a muddy stream bed. This makes for tricky walking. We had to be VERY careful, even though it hadn’t rained for 5 days. There’s also a warning about unexploded ammo from WWII trainings, so we were careful when stepping off the trail. Still, a spectacular trail and we would do it again!

Crowded, but not once you get on trail. It's the sods, if you can't take the mud, go somewhere else.
