An undiscovered treasure. Excellent Jewish services held in an architecturally astonishing synagogue building by a very friendly congregation. It made my Friday night a special one. I can't wait to go back. Who knew such a place existed in Waco, Texas?

I visited the temple, as previously coordinated, with the intention of learning more about the practice of Reform Judaism, and the following Friday service which I wanted to attend. As I was walking towards the entrance, a groundskeeper made eye contact with me and immediately spat onto the steps directly between the entrance door and me, which I pretended not to notice and continued into the building. I was met with the utmost skepticism and condescension from the leader I spoke with at the temple, regardless of my earnest effort to explore Judaism, and find a moderately progressive spiritual home within the community. I mentioned my spiritual agnosticism as well as background working as a full time Chaplain Assistant for two Rabbis in the Army and my proud membership at a Jewish Community Center. He conceded I could attend services, “for awhile” but not dressed how I was, yet his entire demeanor left little ambiguity about his feelings on the matter. I left feeling astonished.nnHowever, the receptionist was exceptionally friendly and made me feel welcome. The facility seemed like it’d be a nice place for a practicing member, too.

I was on a field trip 2 December 17, and walked by and read the historical marker; it’s very sad that such a place has fallen into such disrepair. I’m assuming that there’s a Torah Scroll housed there in with HaShem’s written in it and inside a very nice Ark; however, it’s building is in much MUCH disrepair.
