On the River Restaurant

I have Celiac and just want to compliment this restaurant on their customer service and food. So here is the thing, the gluten-free fryer here isn’t always on but if you call ahead they will fire it up for you. I had a wonderful server who knew about cross-contamination. They will batter all the fried goodness in cornmeal so it’s gluten-free and if you know you are going a few days ahead of time, they will make a gluten-free version of their cornbread. Without realizing the time, we walked in 30 minutes before closing and they served us happily. Being in food service a long time ago, I know a table walking in and asking for adjustments right off the bat can make a person feel some sort of way but he let us know that unfortunately the dedicated fryer is off right now but if I wanted to wait the 45 minutes they could get it going. Of course I wouldn’t ask that of them, he did let me know the grilled items were available and he would make sure the hush puppies weren’t put on my plate. My belly is full and excited about the next time I can have a plate full of fried goodness. We will be back soon.

Had lunch after reading Google reviews here. Yes, the service is exceptional, very friendly. I liked the shrimp, onion rings, and the skillet cornbread is a nice touch. Wheelchair accessible restrooms also. Thanks.

We had heard many great things about On The River so we stopped by to see for ourselves. We chose to have dinner on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was about one-third full when we arrived but got busier after our arrival.nnSERVICE:nThe service was perfect. We were greeted as we entered the restaurant and were immediately seated by a friendly hostess. After we settled in, our friendly server met us at the table and started our beverage order. Our food arrived quickly and was piping hot when it hit the table.nnFOOD:nThe food was really great! Our meal started with small bowls of coleslaw and cast iron cornbread. Both of these items tasted fresh and were delicious. The main course for everyone was seafood. We enjoyed several different recipes of shrimp and catfish. The shrimp was well prepared. The grilled shrimp is seasoned well and full of flavor. The fried shrimp was lightly battered and tender. The stuffed shrimp is a unique item with a bold flavor. The Cajun shrimp is seasoned in a slightly spicy mix and tastes great. The catfish was also lightly battered and buttery soft. We had the cast iron cookie and blueberry cobbler for dessert. Both were amazing. Bring an appetite because there is no shortage of food in their meals.nnATMOSPHERE:nThe restaurant is well maintained and clean. That being said, it is a really neat old building. The hardwood floors and decor take you back many decades to when life was simpler and you could just enjoy a great meal at a fair price down at the local cafe.nnWe were very quickly enamored by On The River. This restaurant has everything including good ol’ fashion charm. Whether you are in the Freeport area or willing to make the easy drive down, make sure you stop by On The River for a great meal at good price. This restaurant easily gets five stars.

Still my favorite place in town to eat. They have great lunch deals and the food is plentiful! Add great service and reasonably priced dishes! You'll love it. At least I do!
