This is where we stay at least twice a year. I love how remote it is. There are outhouses and the campsites are well developed but you still get the feel of primitive camping. Just up from the campsites are some of the prettiest water holes. The only thing that can be a bit of an inconvenience is the fact that it isn't a pay-to-camp site so you aren't guaranteed a spot and it is quite a drive to get there.

My husband and I spent 3 days and nights at Great Meadow, and it was wonderful. We saw no copperheads--not even a garter snake. (We did see a bear running away from our car about two miles from our tent as we drove out to get ice and wood). A pair of owls woke us up one night. The campground was empty except for us (probably due to the daily rain showers--we picked a rough week). We loved the views from our campsite, and enjoyed hiking around the area. We swam briefly in the cold stream running parallel to the camp. I would've preferred a hot shower, but you take what you can get in exchange for a woodland setting. (Take your own toilet paper. The vault toilets are fine, but not serviced often.)nnThe 5 mile gravel drive to the Deer Loop was filled with potholes and took careful negotiating. I don't know how large campers would make it down that road.
