Neat place to visit. You see the barn first. Sitting behind the barn is an old cabin that was used by a hiking association. Just beyond that is an old outhouse.

When a teenager at Pittman Center in the 1940's spent many happy weekends camping in this wonderful spot with day hikes to nearby areas. At that time one could find several abandoned home sites.

Wow, very nice. 200 yards off the main trail, this old farm area is very well maintained, though I'm not sure how much of it is original vs. updated. Maybe a testament to how well it is maintained. You can freely walk through the cabin, outhouse and grounds.

Very interestig and unique place. They should have information about the history behind those cabins.

This is NOT the Messer Cabin. It is the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club cabin. It built between 1934 & 1936 after the park was established. The logs are from other cabins in the area which were dismantled when the park was established. See attached photo of the sign placed at the cabin by the GSMNP. I stayed here in the 50's and early 60's. The Messer barn below the cabin had no connection to the cabin.
