Winding Stair Campground

Just getting away for a quick 2-night outing. Never been in the Ouachita Trail and Winding Stair offered an opportunity to base camp and hike a bit to see the trail. Camp is well maintained, good fire rings and grills. Tables could use some TLC, but they are sturdy and functional. The best type of place for social distancing.

This campground is on the way of Talimena scenic drive. It has nice scenic beauty, ample trees. The area here is under the shadow of mountain and trees.nWe feel very peaceful here. We can click photos here. It has sufficient space here to stand and hangout. But one thing to consider is parking. It does not not have usual parking space. So you can't stay here for more time. So you have to hurry your activities.nBut still a nice place to hangout for some time.

Nice campground, very dark at night and no rowdy guests. If you wait until night and if the moon is mostly covered you can walk over to the lookout point and see the galactic rim.nnOne star knocked off because the trash had not been picked up in a while. Other than that it was very nice.nnPrice is $5 overnight. You just claim a camp spot, put $5 in an envelope and drop it in an overnight box. Note: Several spots are designed for an RV as well and you can pull through.

This beautiful campground is located just off the Talimena Drive. Great for a peaceful weekend in the woods. We stayed on a weekend in early October and the park was full by 9PM on Friday night. Expect pit toilets, no electric, and limited water access. One other thing to note; as another reviewer mentioned, this place is infested with walking stick bugs this time of year. They covered our tent, the car, and seemed attracted to our campfire. They were everywhere! Only reason I gave it 4 stars, otherwise it’s a great spot for tent camping.

Great views,trails and camping. All very cheap.
