Bay Tree Lake State Natural Area was a former state park that was never developed and is now managed as a satellite of Singletary Lake State Park. There is a small parking area right off NC-41 and several miles of trails. We visited for a hike with our dog in the winter and it was a wonderful, secluded hike. Even on a nice weekend, we didn't see another soul. There are no maps available, so recommend using a GPS or phone for navigation. The hiking trails, blazed with white diamonds, make a big loop around the park, but do not provide access to the lake. About half way through the loop are some sandy 4WD roads. We followed these and found a great little beach on the lake for lunch. Awesome place, we'll definitely be back.

Beautiful walking paths and secluded.

We went here for the hiking trail. According to the Singletary Lake State Park website, there is a 4.9 mile hiking trail here marked by white trail markers. I must say that the trail is very poorly marked. There seemed to be no clear hiking trail and the markers were so far spread out that it was difficult to know where you were going. Within a quarter mile, we already lost the trail. Rather than hiking a full 4.9 miles, we probably walked 1.5 miles while trying to follow the white trail markers before returning to our vehicle. This place definitely has potential but needs a better marked foot trail.

I love the idea of an undeveloped park but i was not impressed with this one. The entrance is very sandy so i recommend driving a truck even if parking and walking the trails. The scenery isn't very good and people throw their empty beer cans right on the ground.

Good place to go and relax in the day time and place to try out the 4 wheel drive ;)
