During the Depression era, the Federal Government decided to build planned cities. Greendale was one of three completed. The intent was to build low income housing while combining the best of city and country living and provide construction jobs for the large number of unemployed. In 1932 the government began selling the new construction. They are unusual in design and most do not have basements. Since their construction, the value of these properties has risen substantially rendering the area upper middle class. The Village Hall is the center of this entire project.
