Carlton’s is in the tradition of those clothiers of old — the now nearly extinct brick and mortar stores with excellent customer service; salespeople who knew their inventory and how to help customers find the right size or style for a given occasion; and personal touches like complimentary gift-wrapping or a call or email on your anniversary or birthday. For the most part, small, personalized department stores like Carlton’s simply don’t exist any more. They have gone the way of women wearing hats and gloves on Sunday, of men removing their hats when entering a room, and of other forms of civility and the institutions that embody such civility that seem to have suffered a catastrophic collapse over the past few decades. For all of these reasons, I value the experience of shopping at Carlton’s as much as the beautiful clothing and jewelry they sell. Another characteristic I value there is the buyer’s excellent taste. The clothing and jewelry are carefully curated so that there is never a challenge locating an item or two that you, or someone you love, will really enjoy.nnI never miss a trip to this local treasure when in Rehoboth Beach. You have no idea how great you're going to look until Trey, of Carlton's Apparel, gets you measured. My navy blue wedding tuxedo fit like a glove, as well as my groomsmen! Trey pride's himself in making YOU look good, as if he were wearing the outfit. He's precise, and a great communicator who worked incredibly well under pressure to get my guys fitted to satisfaction, and looking sharp! Nice clothes. Just wish they had more of a selection of fine Italian suites. Unable to fit my suit size. Big shoulders too small a waist. Friendly people.

They don’t do returns, only exchanges. It’s 2020 and you don’t do returns? You’re not just competing against other retail like Brooks Brothers, you’re also competing against online like Amazon and Charles Tyrwhitt, how can you not do returns?nnService was poor, even before they knew I wanted to do a return, from the moment I walked in I felt like I was an inconvenience to them, also not the best strategy in the age of digital commerce since experience is really the only thing setting your apart.nnUsed to like the store, not the biggest selection but every now and then they’d have something I was interested in. Won’t be going back.
