Like many equine statues around Washington, DC this one represents a historic wartime hero.nnGeneral Hancock was a Civil War hero who was famous for his leadership at the battle of Gettysburg.nnThe memorial is close to the Navy Memorial (and it's metro stop), the National Archives and many other great destinations.nnIf you're in to photography be sure to stop by close to sunset when the statue is (sometimes) bathed in amazing golden light.

One of the Civil War Monuments you can see in DC is that of General Hancock found at Pennsylvania Ave. and 7th Street. This is a bronze equestrian statue constructed in 1896 by Henry Jackson Ellicott on order of then President Grover Cleveland.nnGeneral Hancock was a veteran of the American-Mexican War as well as a Union General during the American Civil War. He was also a presidential candidate during the 1880 election.nnThe statue, features General Hancock, sitting impressively upon horseback in military attire. It is worth a quick look for those visiting Smithsonian Museums in the area as well as those specifically seeking out the Civil War Monuments around DC.
