The grandsons love to visit and they learn a lot.
My company volunteered to help plant seeds at Marion Street Garden and I'm so glad we did. Now I know of a GREAT oasis right in DC. Here's why I gave it 5 stars:nn1) It's literally right behind one of DC's best coffee shops- Compass Coffee. It's just a few blocks from two Metro Stations (Mt Vernon and Shaw).nn2) It's in between two row houses giving it a true urban vibe with beautiful photo opportunities.nn3) It's a true community garden because anyone who harvest gets a share of the crops (herbs, veggies, etc).nn4) The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable teaching you a variety of herbs you've probably never heard of like lemon balm (It's amazing and would be good in an arugula salad).nn5) They host events from outdoor movies to educational events and the public is free to have meetings on the benches in the garden or use their little public library within the garden.nnNext time you grab a mint cold brew from Compass Coffee, stroll by Marion Street Garden and enjoy nature!
I love community gardens. It's easy to get to, local organic food, peaceful, healthy and God's gift Free, Win Win for me. Last year the garden had a lot more variety and easy to access by path mark and labeling. That was great and there are foods that a lot of locals in this generation are clueless about, like Swiss chard; Dragon kale ; or fennel. The good news is that there are regular care takers that will educate if you catch them at the right time. This summer the crops were not that great or as much variety and not managed well. Sometimes they were overpicked and other times wasted in the plot. I hope for a better team in coming seasons...be brave and grow eggplant, squash, okra, then make it taste goodud83dude06 I will eat it....but I won't spend $$$ when I can experiment and win win again.. Last year I got okra ,it's amazing when you know what to do with it,; and I , like all normal kids, hated it so much just from knowing it could slime on you....uuuww×....try crispy baked or pickled okraud83eudd17 works for me. There are lots of public gardems, some much better than Marrion st. But its still appreciated and very convenient. The best thing is that it's open access all the time. Winter is sparse but its still open. That's really great!
