As tourists in a local restaurant, we felt taken advantage of. First we were allowed to order too much: “How’s everything?”, waiter asked. “Too much”, I said. “I know!”, he replied. Was that sarcasm?
Second, he refused to give us change, pressuring us to tip! “No service charge. This isn’t America.”, he says. This despite our having to settle for a small table due to reservations.
We had a great experience in Salzburg and Austria, in no small part due to the locals’ hospitality. Maybe it was a low moment, but his bad behavior was isolated and the exception.
