Spencer Lanenn1860s - This area was once known as Frog's Hollow - a swampy district of industry, boarding houses and ill repute.nn1870 - Menzies' boarding house built at 67 Edward Street.nn1876 - Port Office hotel built by John Petrie on south eastern corner of Edward and Margaret Streets.nn1879-80 - Port Office built on north eastern corner of Edward and Margaret Streets.nn1885-90 - Two new warehouses built at 41 and 47-51 Edward Street.nn1890s - Edward Street warehouses and wool store in Felix Street serviced by an unnamed laneway off Margaret Street.nn1900 - Leonard Spencer, of Sheffield in England, Established his ironmongery business in Brisbane, supplying parts for buggies and coaches.nn1903 - Spencer begins a 20 year tenancy of 47-51 Edward Street, which becomes known as Spencer's building.nn1910s-1940s - The laneway serviced a variety of businesses on either side, including a cooper's workshop, sail maker, leather merchants and a tent maker.nn1920s - Spencer built his own premises, Spencer Chambers, at 53 Edward Street.nn1930s-1950s - Spencer's son and grandson continued the family business, which moved into the motor car industry.nn2001 - Top storey of Spencer's building is damaged by fire.nn2010 - Laneway behind Spencer's building and Spencer's Chambers was named Spencer Lane.
