Amcal Pharmacy Ormeau

I thought I should speak up about my experience today at this pharmacy. I was approached by a young assistant, who helped me with an enquiry and pointed me toward some Ear Drops for my Swimmers Ear. I also asked for a generic antihistamine which requires me to produce my drivers licence. It is here where I feel inexperience prevailed and the tone of questioning made me rather uncomfortable. I am a 38 year old former military medic and I have extensive knowledge on most matters medical. After briefly explaining my work on an oil rig and further quizzing she proceeded to inform me that I would not be able to purchase these products again without written authority from my GP. I was given a speech about ‘duty of care’ and I get the impression she was going overboard on what is required of her in her position. When it comes to customer ‘duty of care’ there is definite line between following guidelines and overstepping your knowledge. She wrongly assumed she knew more about my own personal health requirements than me and her conduct with me, while technically ‘by the book’, was unprofessional and is not how customers want to be treated when managing their own health. The on-site pharmacist was present and she would be the only one qualified enough to advise me on what is necessary (or not) in order to purchase over the counter products. Please note these are not prescription medications. I would advise some training is necessary regarding customer care and questioning. If everyone leaves this pharmacy feeling as uncomfortable as I was then I doubt any would come back. I certainly won’t be.

Just moved to the area and I love this place! Right next to Coles in the new Ormeau village! The pharmacist and staff are down to earth & always willing to help you. The prices are great too.

Good looking place, with a nice atmosphere. Staff are friendly and service was pretty quick. Got all my Christmas shopping done there, gifts were well received.

Very friendly staff, wide range of products including variety of gluten free and lactose free healthy food. Convenient and flexible hours 7am-9pm!
