This airport may have started life in 1939 – 1941 when US “Cash & Carry” laws prevented aircraft delivery directly into Canada, which was at war with Germany & Italy. So aircraft were landed just inside the US and then pushed across the border and flown away by Canadian and other Commonwealth pilots. As the name implies these were all paid for in cash, mainly gold. These Canadian and British war orders are what pulled the US economy out of the depression era. They were enormous sparks that got US factories going. By the time the US was attacked by Japan these orders had played a significant role in preparing US industry for war production when it needed weapons for itself in 1942. The US would have remained neutral had Japan not attacked it in December 1941. By then Canada had been fighting for over two years.
