Long story short for those who don’t want a long read: Booked an MVI with Ideal equipment, they replaced the front brake pads without prior consent or calling to ask if I wanted the work done. The whole story: My car was in at ideal Equipment for an MVI, at the time of booking no questions were asked about what would happen if any work needed done, I simply said “the car needs an MVI”. When I went to pick up the car Brent(the owner of Ideal Equipment) was at his desk. I said I was here to pick up my car that had an MVI done. He shuffles around on his desk looking for my paperwork. It was left in my car I had to run out and grab it, hand it to him and he says “yes we did MVI and front Brake pads” to which I reply “you did Pads? I just wanted an MVI. If anything was wrong I was going to fix it myself.” The shop OWNER(Brent) looks at me and says “I knew nothing about this car other than it needed an MVI, there were no special instructions not to do any work”. After this he becomes very agitated and is literally bouncing in his chair ranting about how “I guess I’ll have to start doing like other shops in town and refuse to do an MVI if the person wants to do the work themselves!” Claiming that people are blaming shops for something going wrong with their car after they fixed it themselves. Im not sure what that had to do with my situation, or any others for that matter. If a shop keeps proper records then they have nothing to worry about. As far as what the bill ended up being, it wasn’t unreasonable. It was simply a bill I wasn’t expecting and did not approve of or ask for in any way. A simple phone call would have been all that was necessary to avoid any of this, or even if they asked about “what if it needs work” when I called to place the appointment. In hind sight I should either asked for the old parts to be put back on or for the labor charge to be dropped if the old parts had already been disposed of, but in the moment with how agitated Brent seemed and not wanting to cause a scene with other customers in the office I opted to pay and get out. No apology was given or even any acknowledgment that what was done was wrong, it seemed as if this behaviour was common practice at ideal equipment.
