Nice place
Very good place
It has been many months since I enjoyed the previous Marc R. Soto anthology, The Divergent Man, and as a junkie of letters I could say that I already had "monkey" to read something entirely his own. While it is true that we could have small bites in different compilations, such as Aquelarre (Salto de Página), where we could read again the story that defines Soto par excellence, Gatomaquia (a story that I read and reread hundreds of times ), what my voracious stomach wanted to digest was at all costs a new "delicatessen" of the Cantabrian author based in Madrid.
For this occasion, the chef has chosen three dishes of different texture, since the starter is a short story, Dream of snow and mud, the first dish is a somewhat more extensive story, The smile of the clock and as a second course approaches the short novel, Long nights of rain, which properly serves as the title of the compilation. Everything perfect and well seasoned, giving the diner a first mild story to satisfy the appetite, a second with seasoning and exceptional (I have another story to read and reread as Gatomaquia), and a final part of the agape as mandated by the canons, with "chicha" and end point.
The story of Dream of snow and mud is placed in 1977 and tells us of the hatred that a child has for his younger brother, and will lead us to the final situation, where in a surprising way for the reader, will give us the coup de grace and everything that we had not been able to grasp in the preceding scenes, makes us want to continue with the following story. And that's when The Clock Smile arrives, which in this case is dated in 2010. Here is the story that shows again what Soto is capable of doing with those who want to sit down and read their stories, taking him by the hand paths that he wants and needs, and when he reaches the final part, he releases that conductive hand and leaves us at the mercy of the outcome, where the explosion of flavor "made in Soto" takes place, and this is where you close the book and do not It can but reflect on what was read and smack and re-note that aftertaste of well-eaten.
With long nights of rain, which takes us to 1967, we are faced with this town that surely we have all had, either to spend weekends or for some vacations, as has been my case, and it is easy to recognize the characters that will appear in this short novel (or long story, depending on how you look at it) to those neighbors that we may have greeted any day in our walks. It is one of those attempts by the author to develop stories of more depth, of greater length, and as it happened in the case of the divergent man, he does it with good literary manners, predicting forthcoming literary adventures in the form of a novel, although in fact, one of the projects in which he is currently working is the second of these long nights, which ends with a third installment to form a literary triptych that is structured around that everyday terror with which we have become accustomed to deal with and which nevertheless does not Stop scaring us whenever possible.
When after a meal that fills us, the waiter comes to ask us about the dessert, one does not usually make use of the sin of gluttony and prefers to have a good digestion before getting stuffed, because good bites are tasted in the later tranquility when we remember the flavors that we have been able to taste. That is why it is preferable not to take that dessert and rub your hands thinking that soon we can enjoy another interesting and appetizing anthology from Marc's literary stoves.
