The story of Almaden begins when nature created in its entrails the largest mercury deposit known to date. It is estimated that Almaden has produced approximately one third of the mercury consumed by humanity. The Almadén deposit was formed some 430 million years ago, when the quartzites that today make up its subsoil were being deposited under the sea on a shallow continental shelf. At the same time, with this sedimentary episode, a deep basic volcanism arose that dragged the mercury from the bowels of the earth. This event lost in time will mark the history of a people and its people to the present.
