We were lucky enough to be able to stay at Twr y Felin for two weeks in August.
We had booked back in January and were just outside the lockdown restrictions.
The Hotel is superb, and the staff made our stay one of the most enjoyable in the UK.
Standards of cleanliness, and adapted policy for guests to feel safe with CV19 at large, were well devised and executed. We knew we were being looked after.
St Davids is stunning if walking is your pleasure. Thanks to all the staff we definitely hope to return.
Booked as it was the last place with a room on a wet August day. We paid £220 for one night so I had high expectations of this award winning 4* Hotel.
First the good. The staff were spot on, firstly I had issues with charging the car but the reception team resolved these with a 3 pin plug. The grounds, the shared spaces and the room was spot on, clean and crisp. We had sea views which was a positive. We tested the staff by asking for bits and pieces we had "forgotten" and they were able to oblige. The beds were comfortable and the curtains shut out most of the light so i went hunting for my pet hate, stray light. I found some, the radio screen was annoying and there were a few little lights about the place but it wasn't too bad.
Now the not so good. No facilities beyond rooms and restaurant. Not sure how 4* works with nothing on site. For the price I would have expected more than having to leave the hotel to do everything. Quite literally it was either be in the room or leave the hotel. The restaurant is, as far as i can tell, excellent. However, I found it to be overpriced and lacking in much choice. We ended up hunting for chips. I have stayed in some excellent hotels and was always able to get a burger on room service. We ordered tea and coffee whilst our room was being converted from a double to a twin, nice test for the staff but they didn't keep us waiting too long.
We had our chips in the room and fired up the TV and were disappointed to discover only terrestrial channels. Again, for the price and star rating we had expected more. We did sleep well but were woken by construction sounds as there is an extension being put up.
In the morning we were looking forward to breakfast which we had ordered for room delivery the night before. It was meant to arrive at 09:30 but at 09:45 we had to call to chase it up. It arrived just before 10 and was nice and fresh.
Here comes my standard breakfast gripes. There were no beans. I know many high end hotels do not serve beans as they are viewed as "low class". Unfortunately that leads to a poorly lubricated breakfast and no sauces were offered. My second issue was a major lack of milk. Two grown adults having tea, coffee and cereal need more than half a pint of milk. More was sent when asked for but it wasn't ideal. We did have breakfast deducted from our stay which equated to a £20 saving.
We did like the hotel but felt it was too expensive and lacking in facilities for the type of traveller that we are. It needs more on site, pretty much everything else in St Davids is weather dependent, for over £200 a night I would expect options.
Superb food. Mind you they do have 2 AA rosettes.
Could not fault the hotel. Staff are friendly. Hotel is beautiful, the rooms superb. The restaurant is also amazing- some of the best food I have ever tried! 5 stars.
We had the pleasure of staying in the Tyddewi suite at Twr Y Felin on Valentines Day just gone. We knew of the hotel’s reputation and it did not disappoint. We were blown away by everything, from the welcoming, generous and hard working staff, the lovely food and drink to the quality of the suite itself.
The suite was unique, of exceptional quality and came with added personal touches, including a hand written welcoming card, local chocolates and a chilled bottle of processco for the occasion.
This sense of locality continued at the restaurant. In the evening we enjoyed a seven course taster menu which included ingredients sourced from the local area - it is clear the hotel is proud of its Welsh heritage and works hard to ensure that it showcases the best Wales has to offer.
The service, presentation and standard of food was of an excellent standard.
Finally, the technology in the hotel was brilliant (something we look for) and remained uninterrupted despite the bad weather.
We cannot recommend Twr Y Felin enough, we have been talking about the stay since we left. We are already planning our return and intend on bringing friends with us next time - the hotel really is a destination in its own right.
