Review St Peters Lane; Canterbury Firstly, I would like to say to all of you reading this review, when writing a review, I make them as accurate as I can. Just like you, I seek reviews to be accurate so I can make informed decision…..I hope this one helps you. I tend to come to Canterbury about 3 times a year to 1) visit my sister who now lives in Ramsgate and 2) visit the city where I met my partner as students back in 1987. We have tried a several different places to stay, including an apartment in the city centre, and Ramsgate hotel on the harbour front, these (and some others) proved to be disappointing. As a result, we have always returned to two favourites, a cottage just outside the city walls and the local Best Western a little further out of the city. On this occasion, the cottage we normally stay at was booked and due to the uncertainty of who exactly was travelling with me at time of booking, I decided to look for another house in or near the city. Upon finding St Peters Lane I decided to book and hope the house lived up to expectation. – I was not disappointed. This is great house in a perfect city centre location. Outside (to the rear) there is a nice courtyard garden, with bistro table for morning coffee. French doors lead into a living / dining room, (with a storage cupboard for coats and shoes). There is also a downstairs cloakroom and good size kitchen. Upstairs are three bedrooms, two doubles (both a good size) and a single room at the rear and good size master bathroom. Sorry for keep using the term ‘a good size’, but I think all the rooms are, and a note for Americans/Canadians reading this, the water pressure is good too, so you will get a good shower. The interior is carpeted and very clean. The kitchen is well equipped if you do want to eat in/at home and includes a Nespresso with a pack of pods – handy for a morning cup of coffee if you arrive late. The house itself is a fairly new build, so if you are looking for a Tudor cottage with inglenook fireplace this may not be for you, but I would stress to you - don’t overlook this house. The location is great, you really are in the ‘hustle and bustle’ of this beautiful busy medieval city centre and yet this house it is a nice quiet retreat. Parking at the property is nice and easy too. The Pound Lane car park is right behind the house and when I booked was included (just need to tell the agent your registration number). This is a bonus in Canterbury as the alternatives would be to park outside the city and walk back in or pay for parking every day. Here you simply drive in and out of the car park as and when. I would like to make a point about the management of the property. Rachel was wonderful in helping us, making our booking, answering our questions giving her mobile number in case of emergencies. Very helpful and hopefully comfort for the owners to know they have a good pair of hands in charge. Two last things in conclusion; Canterbury is a special place for my partner and myself. It is where we met in 1987, and the first city we came to when we returned after 12 years in Canada….It always feels like we are coming home when we visit. The house on St Peters Lane added a bit of extra magic on this occasion…..not only was it a wonderful find, but my partner (a tv producer) used the rear bedroom to write some scripts while look across to his old student house where he wrote his essays and thesis some 33 years ago. After leaving the property and driving home, my partner asked me if I preferred the cottage just outside the city or the house on St Peters Lane? My response and he agreed, was this. While we love the little cottage, they are different, but I think we would both rather book St Peters Lane for our next stay in Canterbury….Hopefully soon. Lawrence (Cheshire, UK)
