I've been a few times in St Nicholas Hotel which is part of George hotel. I like how modernised it is, but the rooms are quite small im most cases. I like the self check in and check out system. It's much more convenient when working right. Price wise, it's one of the most expensive hotels in Colchester, but it is literally on High Street, so food and drink services around guaranteed. Love the privacy here and soundproofing. 💯🥰
Stayed at the George in Colchester 5 times. I would give the hotel 4 stars, but I was in a room once, with a friend romantically involved. We had elected to stay for another day but about noon, we were interrupted in the midst of naughtyness by a seemingly curious senior member of staff, who let themselves into the room, without even knocking. All we heard was the key in the lock, and before it was possible to leave the bed, this member of staff poked her head in to have a gawp. I was quite annoyed about it at the time and wanted to complain with assertion, but my placid friend was less concerned. They gave us a free bottle of white wine, but to be frank, I think we should have gotten a free night's stay there, to cover the embarrassment of their terrible intrusion.
Anyway, this is a great old building and similar to the Red Lion Hotel in many ways and maids told us, hand on heart that the place is haunted, but my experience has soured me from staying here again.
Don't let it out you off though.
Decent place to go for a pint. Extremely comfortable sofas in the bar.
I always love coming to the George, never stayed over night however we usually come in every Wednesday evening for a few drinks before we go somewhere else for food. I have had the food in here before and really enjoyed it. The staff are all really friendly which is nice. The area for casual drinks is lovely, nice sofas and arm chairs that are super cosy. The outside area is nice too. Can't wait to see the complete renovations.
Good location and a warren which added to atmosphere. Lovely, comfortable bed but room too warm so thankful for the fan but the noise from it did not help a restful sleep.
Dirty marks around light switches. Net curtains in room 105 were filthy as were the windows.
Has the bed been pulled out and cleaned underneath recently?
Two mugs on room and one had lip marks so had to boil kettle and clean myself.
Chandelier..one arm was bent over with wires showing.
Room needs completely decorating. It was worn and dirty with threadbare carpets.
No evening meals although, because of good location there were plenty of restaurants nearby. We even had breakfast out because if the cups were not cleaned thoroughly we could not trust the state of the kitchens.
All in all it is a worn out and dirty hotel.
Even the outside peeling paintwork says it all.
Sorry but have to tell it like it is.
Would not recommend even if they knocked 50% off the bill.
NB ..Apparently there are two parts to this hotel...the old wing and the new one.
Unfortunately we were in the decrepit old one.
We stayed here for a couple of nights when attending a wedding in the area.
The George is about to be updated. We stayed in the older building which was very tired and tatty. The beds however were clean and comfortable.
The newer part of the building is over the road. I gather renovations on the old building are due yo start within the next month or so. I would be keen to visit after these have been completed.
Probably woukd have given the older part a 2 * however the location was ideal, there was parking (a little tricky to find) behind that item at £9.50 a day.
The staff were friendly and accommodation. These factors raised my rating to 3*
