It is a shame that I can't give this cottage five stars as I'd really love to, but it has to be three based upon a few issues that really need addressing. Firstly the good points: The cottage itself is in a magnificent location, ideally located for the North York Moors National Park and the owner was very easy to communicate with (all done via email). It has a wonderful enclosed front and rear garden, and the neighbours were very quiet. The main bedroom was lovely and bright, and the bed was comfortable (possibly a bit soft but that is personal preference). Sadly onto the less good points: The cottage was obviously once carefully and considerately restored, but like so many other cottages it has been left over time to gradually deteriorate. Upon arrival, we weren't convinced that the cottage has been cleaned whatsoever, with dirty windows, cobwebs everywhere, and dust/hair all over the floors. The dining room tablecloth was completely covered in crumbs (probably from the previous occupants breakfast), and the upstairs bathroom plugholes were clogged with matted hair as well as being generally grimey and a bit mouldy. Lightbulbs were blown throughout the kitchen (primarily the underlights) and the back garden light was completely blown. The upstairs bathroom heated towel rail (the only form of heat) wasn't working and despite looking I couldn't find any way of turning it on, and the electric shower was temperamental at best (it kept cutting out as if there was a thermal circuit being tripped). The dining room has got a rather inconvenient beam located just above the rear door (which sticks and will no doubt shatter one day) which I managed to catch my head on causing quite a nasty cut. I completely accept that most people aren't 6ft3ins, but there should be some form of warning on the beam (there is on the rest of them) as I'm sure more litigious members of the public would have already started a personal injury claim! Some people may say that one expects an older property to be a bit quirky, but we live in a 17th Century property and I'm glad to say that there isn't a single cobweb, and the windows are all regularly cleaned. As alluded to above, the cottage has obviously been lovely in the past, and could be again if the owner took the time to shut it down for a few weeks to give it a deep clean and to address the maintenance issues. The cottage isn't cheap, so really one would expect a premium product, which sadly was not delivered this time. I'm sure some of the above could have been addressed by the owner if they'd been raised by us during our stay, but given that check out time is 10am on the final day, I would strongly suggest that there is adequate time to do an inventory/check over of the whole property before being satisfied that it is fit for the next resident; a tenant should really only need to contact the owner in an emergency. Three stars overall, but with a bit of thought and TLC this could easily be a five star property.
