A proper old English city centre pub. Historical building (pub on the site since the early 17th century). Un-fussy but comfortable interior design. Well kept beer (Tim Taylor's Landlord in this instance). Friendly staff, Martin the landlord is a great bloke. Cricket on the telly. What's not to like! 😁👍 (5 stars)
We also stayed for a couple of nights. The room was a bit like your favourite grandma: quirky but friendly, creaky but characterful (floorboards and bed, which was also a bit firm), down to earth but welcoming. Pricey at £70. (3 stars)
Martin's breakfasts are great. The continental breakfast comes with the room price, and is generous. It's an extra £5 per head for cooked English breakfast which was superb. (5 stars)
My husband and I came to Chester for our first weekend city break together, we choose the Golden Eagle because it was well priced and had a "Chester" look.
Arriving at the hotel we were greeted personally by the landlord and the pub's security guard told us they were worried we didn't arrive at the time estimated and were afraid we would have gotten lost - this won my heart!
He then showed us to our room where he explained the facilities and how the service of the hotel works. He was very welcoming and gave us a homey feeling.
The room had a Cheshire Regiment theme with a massive en suite walk in shower, the usual tea/coffee facilities and some very quaint antique furniture. The bed was flawless, one of the most comfortable mattresses I've ever slept in, the sheets were crisp and warm
We were VERY impressed that the room had a record player, so I got re-acquainted with Pink Floyd, The Jam and Bob Marley while we got ready to go out.
The drinks were fairly priced, the service was quick and all the staff were very knowledgeable about local landmarks and attractions.
THE ROOMS ARE RIGHT UPSTAIRS AND YOU CAN'T HEAR THE PUB'S MUSIC... I'm so impressed by how quiet and dark it is, nothing will disturb your sweet dreams!
We chose the additional breakfast option both days; we rolled down about 9:30 am to find the bar empty but for a wonderfully laid table just for us. The breakfast itself was spot on, a full English done right makes the world of difference.
We had a perfect weekend in Chester, and it was largely thanks to The Golden Eagle. We can't recommend it enough and have resolved to return regularly to see more of the city and have more laughs. Thanks guys, we'll see you again!
Lovely old fashioned city center pub with plenty of character.
Great selection of beers and friendly staff.
Whats not to like?
Used to go here quite a lot when I lived local, the music is better in here than a lot of city centre pubs. Beer pretty good and usually a good vibe, never seems too quiet either.
lovely pub, martin was so welcoming & helpful, knocking up a brilliant vegan breakfast at short notice. lovely staff, clean & funky room, highly recommend - thank you! plus great music in the bar & vinyl records & player in our room 💗
