Well cooked food. Fish and chips was extremely good. Very polite and respectful staff. Clean toilets. I'll be visiting again.

We had lunch at this town centre pub restaurant today. There is a Covid friendly one way system in place with disposable food menus and the table was cleaned in front of us. However the drinks menus don't appear to be cleaned between customers nor are the salt and pepper mills. The salt mill was quite dirty. The food was very good - we both had fish and chips with a halloumi starter. The food waiter was very good, prompt and polite. However the bar and drinks service was a bit chaotic. We watched people being ignored while waiting at the lectern by the entrance. You have to help yourself to menus and order at the bar which wasn't made clear when you are seated. There were three staff at the bar but they were very slow and didn't appear to have a system in place. We had to wait half an hour for our bottle of wine even though we reminded them twice about this. The wine arrived after we'd finished our starter and was cleared away. Not good. The waiter said the delay was due to a lack of clean glasses yet it seemed clear to us they were understaffed and had no system in place. The wine was good when it arrived and I would insist upon getting drinks when you order rather than wait. The place is owned by two men, one of whom was doing odd jobs but didn't seem to be helping much and the other walked around with a phone pressed to his ear. They could usefully take charge I think. We heard staff openly talking about their employment terms and conditions which suggests the place is having recruitment and retention issues. We'd eat here again and hope these staffing and service issues will get sorted soon.

Claiming to be the oldest Inn in Kendal, Ye Olde Fleece Inn is really nice. Covid precautions being followed very well. The service was excellent but sadly the food wasn't. The gammon needed cooking on both sides, and the batter on the fish was very sloppy and uncooked on the inside. Would try again when next in Kendal and hopefully will be better.
