Visited on a special offer and was pleasantly surprised, the food and service where both excellent. Staff helpful and pleasant. Hotel set in picturesque grounds, a bit dated but doesn't detract from it's character and class.

Hotel doing its best to operate under the Corona Virus restrictions, which meant some services are not fully operational. Still pleasant, clean, friendly Would stay again.

The building itself is stunning located in really pleasant surroundings and has potential to be an excellent hotel. I could see that rooms were currently being refurbished and the main lobby/drawing room looked excellent. However, our room and the restaurant really could have done with some TLC. For example, our room had windows that looked like they haven't been cleaned in years (covered in cobwebs and stains), wallpaper had been ripped off the wall, and several patches of mould throughout the room. The shower was also quite old and really needed modernising. I found it confusing that there was no soap, toileteries, or tea and coffee in the rooms and all had to be requested from reception (and then handled by the receptionist) - I assume this is due to Covid, but struggled to see the logic in this - they are all individually wrapped so surely the housekeepers can just provide them when they service the room. I think providing the small hotel soaps during a pandemic is probably a good idea. Breakfast was unusual. A sign asking for residents to wait to be seated which took five minutes before a waiter appeared (one of my pet hates is waiting to be seated). Surprisingly, the waiter asked us to sit anywhere we liked... why did we have to wait five minutes for that? Despite having two waiters, neither were in the same room at the same time leaving the restaurant unnattended for long periods of time. Food was excellent, but just a shame our toast arrived several minutes after we had finished. Restaurant was slightly tired, with old dusty lampshades and windowsills with stains, just needs that extra bit of TLC. Overall, it was fine, I can see that effort is being made to refurbish and modernise this hotel so I think it's on the right track.
