Really enjoyable stay. Free reign to camp wherever we wanted on the front grounds, huge open space where even when it got really busy, there was still 100m or so between campers. Only downside was that the carpark is a fair way from the camping spots, but once we'd done a few trips and got set up... that was also part an upside, as it was peaceful, quiet and kept the ground untouched.

Youth hostels can vary in quality but YHA Castleton is brilliant. A beautiful peaceful location, a friendly but ultimately very greedy cockerel, a sensible approach to social distancing and a jumping off point for some of the best walking in the Peak District. And you're close to all the restaurants and pubs in Castleton. Cost effective, not luxury, but great for families and walkers alike.

*Corona specific* Most of my criticism is based on our stay after they opened during Corona so this may not be representative in general. There were no communal facilities open except for the garden, but we had wanted to be self-catered. They 'allowed' us to cook on our camping stoves in the garden but offered us no simple potwash facilities. I understand limitations had to be made but the only other option was to buy their cooked food at almost restaurant prices or go out to eat every day, and at a YHA you're generally looking to save money hence it being set up for youth stays. Despite this the stay prices were the same as normal, I get that they might be under pressure but equally you have to offer good value for money which it didn't really feel was right. As well as this the room we had was basically an oven at around 27° overnight, great insulation were it winter. Windows had childlocks that were non-removable so we couldn't get air through. After a sleepless first night we asked for a fan, which we got and were greatful for but it was this industrial grade thing that was so loud we still didn't sleep much. Overall, a shame as the building, grounds, staff and location were all excellent.

Amazing experience and so much fun for the kids. Plenty of things to do around the manor and then so many walks and pubs to visit locally. Thank you to the amazing staff too.
