VADODARA: M S University (MSU) has decided to name its Donors Plaza ground as Maharaja Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad Parisar . Similarly, the university has also decided to rechristen general education building as Swami Vivekananda Bhavan. This decision was taken during a special syndicate meeting held on Monday to mark the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Sayajirao Gaekwad and also Swami Vivekananda. Members of the royal family of erstwhile Baroda state including MSU's chancellor Mrunalini Devi Puar will lay the foundation stone for a full sized statue of Maharaja Pratapsinhrao on Tuesday which happens to be Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad Diamond Jubilee Day. Although MSU functions in the name of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad - the erstwhile ruler of Baroda state - whose vision led to the formation of the university, there is no building in the name of Maharaja Pratapsinhrao, who had ensured that his grandfather's vision of gifting a university to Baroda sees the light of the day. Maharaja Pratapsinhrao had in fact also served as the first chancellor of MSU between 1949 and 1951. Before it was named as Faculty of Commerce in 1949, MSU's biggest faculty was known as the Maharaja Pratapsinh College of Commerce and Economics which was established in 1942. On Monday, the syndicate members also decided that starting from next year, the week starting from January 3 will be celebrated as alumni week by the university. From this year onwards, every department will be asked to make efforts and start enrolling their ex-students spread across the globe leading to the annual alumni week celebrations.
