This post office building is a memorial to my father The late Rev. J. Joseph who came to Gudalur as an ordained priest in 1951 as Malabar Missionary of The Mar Thoma Church. He had made Gudalur his place of residence for his family from that time. His has 7 children and some of them continues to call Gudalur home. Rev . Joseph was a visionary and founder of many churches, schools,Colleges in Coonoor,Mysore,Chungathara,Edakkarra,Nilambur and other places. He bought 6 acres of land for the Church in the Gudalur town on old court road in 1950s. The present St.Thomas Schools, St.Thomas Mar Thoma Church and parsonage is built on this land. He was a man of extra-ordinary outlook for the welfare of his beloved Gudalur and Nilgiri biosphere. He always said that 'Gudalur is the Gem of Nilgiris and India'

The post office which started in 1950s and the name marthoma nagar was invented by Rev . J .Joseph the first Malabar missionary of marthoma church. His family contributed the building for the post office.
