Srirangapatna (also called as Srirangapattana in Kannada language) is located at a distance of 15 km from Mysore. Srirangapatna is located in Mandya district and is of great religious, cultural and historic significance. The entire Srirangapatna is enclosed by the river Kaveri to form an island. This island in the river Kaveri, is referred to as Goutama Kshetra. The town takes its name from the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, one of the main attractions of the town. Srirangapatna was historic capital of the Warrior-Kings Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan who fought against British rule. Several monuments relating to his rule are spread across the island. Places of interest at Srirangapatna: The Fort: From here, Tipu Sultan charged to the legendry British soldiers with his sword. An obelisk in Fort marks the spot where he fell - betrayed by his own men. In the Fort is a mosque and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. Sri Ranganathaswamy temple: This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha. The temple was constructed in 9th century by the rulers of Ganga dynasty. This temple is considered as one of the most important Vaishnavite centers of pilgrimage in south India. Lord Ranganatha swamy is portrayed as resting on the bed of Aadi Sesha. It is believed that all the islands formed in the Kaveri River are sacred to Lord Ranganathaswamy, and large temples have been built in very ancient times dedicated to Lord Ranganatha swami on the three largest islands. The temple at Srirangapatna is also known as Aadi Ranga, the temple at Shivasamudram is known as Madhya Ranga and the temple at Srirangam as Anthya Ranga. Daria Daulat Bagh: The Daria Daulat Bagh was constructed in 1784; this Summer Palace was one of Tipu's favourite retreats. Made of teak, the Indo-Saracenic structure is decorated in frescoes. Gumbaz: Housing the mortal remains of Tipu Sultan, his father Hyder Ali and his mother, the Gumbaz has superb ebony doors inlaid with ivory. Nimishamba Temple: The Nimishamba temple at Ganjam is located on the banks of river Kaveri. The temple is dedicated to goddess Nimishamba and is about 3 km from Srirangapatna. Karighatta: The temple of Lord Srinivasa at Karighatta (Black Hill) is situated a few kilometers from Srirangapatna. The deity is that of Kari-giri-vasa (one who resides on the black hill). Paschima Vaahini: The Paschima Vaahini portion of the Kaveri at Srirangapatana is believed as sacred; the pious come from far and wide to dip the ashes of the departed and perform obsequies to their ancestors in this river water. The other attraction of Srirangapattana is Rangantittu Bird Sanctuary which is the breeding place for several species of birds.
