Statue of Sri Ramanujacharya Ramanuja or Ramanujacharya (1017–1137 CE ) was an Indian theologian, philosopher, and one of the most important exponents of the Sri Vaishnavism tradition within Hinduism. His philosophical foundations for devotionalism were influential to the Bhakti movement. Fearing persecution Sri Rāmānujā moved to Thondanur for 14 years, wherein he converted a Jain king, Bitti Deva to Hinduism after miraculously healing his daughter. Saint Ramanujacharya, who hailed from Tamil Nadu, stayed at Tondanuru village (now Thonnur) for 13 years, some 950 years ago and strove for social and religious development. He played a major role in eradication of untouchability and the caste system and, constructed lakes and temples. It is considered as Ramanuja’s ‘karmabhoomi’ and is thus a sacred place. It is a giant statue of Ramanujacharya built near a water body. The approach road to the base of the statue is not in good condition. It is better viewed from the main road across the water body. Direction boards or route maps are lacking, but since it is visible from the road due to its huge size one can’t miss it. It is a colourfully painted statue and hope they maintain it in good condition as it is exposed to vageries of nature. This 36-foot tall Ramanujacharya’s statuewas installed by the Yadugiri Yathiraja Mutt of Bengaluru, at Kerethonnuru as part of the Saint’s Sahasramanotsava (millenium)on 26th April 2017. No much information or details about the cost of construction and the name of the sculpture is available. Behind the hillock at the base of which the statue is situated is the Thonnur Lake. Amazing place, very peaceful, approach road in part not in good condition. They should install clear direction and also provide more information about the statue. It might be good idea to install few information about Sri Ramanujar. The influence, the work he has done should be propagated. An very important place require proper maintenance as well decent approach.
